I Can't Wake Up! alarm not working? 7 causes and fixes
If your I Can't Wake Up! alarm didn't ring — or fired silently, or the wake-up task never appeared — the cause is usually iOS, not the app. Like every third-party alarm on iPhone (the same is true of Alarmy and Sleep Cycle), it only gets to make noise if a stack of system conditions all hold, and any one of them can quietly flip.
Work down the list in order — it's sorted by how often each turns out to be the answer.
Quick answer: check the app wasn't force-quit before bed, that its notifications are on with sound, that it's allowed through your overnight Focus, that Ringtone and Alerts volume is up, and that Low Power Mode didn't kick in. Then run a two-minute test alarm with your real night settings.
1. The app was force-quit before bed
Swiping the app out of the app switcher is the most common killer. A task-based alarm needs the app alive in the background to ring continuously and show the wake-up task screen; killed, you get at best a single notification chime and no task. The app's own Alarm Quitting Prevention settings guard against closing it during an alarm — they can't help if it was dead before the alarm fired.
Fix: open the app before bed and leave it. If you clear the switcher out of habit, make this the exception.
2. A Focus or Do Not Disturb is silencing it
Third-party alarms arrive as notifications, and Do Not Disturb, Sleep Focus and custom Focuses silence notifications by default. Sleep Focus is the sneaky one — it enables itself nightly once you've set up a sleep schedule, which is why the alarm can work for weeks and stop the day you configure Sleep in the Health app.
Fix: Settings → Focus → your overnight Focus → Apps → allow I Can't Wake Up!, and allow Time Sensitive Notifications in that Focus.
3. Notifications got turned off — or lost their sound
Settings → Notifications → I Can't Wake Up!: Allow Notifications on, Sounds on, Banners on. A "Turn Off" tapped on one notification weeks ago, or a bulk notification clean-up, is usually how this one happens. An alarm that shows a banner with no sound is this or cause 4.
4. The volume that matters is down
On iOS 26 and earlier, notification and alarm sound follows Ringtone and Alerts (Settings → Sounds & Haptics) — and with "Change with Buttons" on, a stray volume press during the day lowers it silently. From iOS 27 there's a new Match Ringtone Volume toggle that can give alarms their own slider; check where the update left it. Full walkthrough in iPhone alarm too quiet.
5. Low Power Mode throttled it
Low Power Mode restricts background activity — exactly what a third-party alarm depends on. A phone that dropped under 20% overnight and auto-enabled it is a plausible cause of a late, quiet or missing alarm.
Fix: charge overnight; if you want distance from the bed, move the charger across the room rather than skipping it.
6. Silent mode, depending on your version
Whether the alarm rings through the silent switch depends on how that version of the app delivers sound. Apps that have adopted iOS 26's AlarmKit ring through Silent Mode and Focus the way Apple's Clock does — you'll know because they ask for a separate alarm permission. If yours hasn't asked, treat the silent switch as a risk and test it.
7. It rang — and you beat the task half-asleep
The cause nobody wants. I Can't Wake Up! offers eight wake-up tasks — math, memory, order, repeat, rewrite, shake, match, and a barcode scan — and all but the barcode happen on the phone in your hand, in bed. Half-asleep brains solve math on autopilot, shake a phone for ten seconds, and match tiles without forming a memory of it. If the alarm's toggle is off in the morning and you don't remember the task, this is what happened; why you turn off alarms in your sleep explains the mechanism.
The barcode task is the strongest of the eight for exactly this reason — it's the only one that requires leaving the bed. Its weakness: the barcode is static, so a photo of it kept on the nightstand defeats it permanently.
The two-minute test
After any change: turn on your overnight Focus, flip the silent switch, set a two-minute alarm, lock the phone, and wait without touching it. Full volume with the task screen means you're fixed. Banner without sound is cause 3 or 4. Nothing is cause 1, 2 or 5.
If the tasks have stopped working on you
Everything above gets the alarm ringing again. It doesn't change the design limit: a task you can complete from bed will eventually be completed from bed, asleep. If that's your pattern, the fix is an off switch that physically isn't there.
WakeUpBroo has no tasks and no dismiss button at all — the alarm stops only when you type a rotating code shown on wakeupbroo.com/code, which won't open on a phone, from a laptop or other device across the room. The code changes every few minutes, so the barcode-photo trick has no equivalent. It doesn't test whether you can do a puzzle half-asleep; it tests whether you're standing up. FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why is my I Can't Wake Up! alarm not going off?
Most often the app was force-quit before bed, a Sleep Focus or Do Not Disturb silenced its notifications, notification sounds are off, Ringtone and Alerts volume is low, or Low Power Mode restricted it overnight. Like every third-party iPhone alarm, it depends on all of those being right.
Does I Can't Wake Up! work if the app is closed?
Going to the home screen is fine; force-quitting it from the app switcher is not. The continuous ringing and the wake-up task screen depend on the app being alive in the background, and its quitting-prevention settings only protect an alarm that is already ringing.
Which I Can't Wake Up! task is best for heavy sleepers?
The barcode task — it is the only one of the eight that requires leaving the bed. Its weakness is that the barcode is static, so a saved photo of it defeats the task permanently.
The alarm rings but I solve the task asleep — what now?
That is the design limit of on-phone tasks, not a bug you can fix. WakeUpBroo removes the on-phone dismiss entirely: no tasks, no dismiss button, and the alarm stops only when you type a rotating code from wakeupbroo.com/code on a device across the room.
Tasks you can do from bed get done from bed.
WakeUpBroo has no tasks and no dismiss button. It stops only when you type a rotating code from this website on a device across the room.
