Sleep Cycle alarm not going off? 8 causes and fixes
A Sleep Cycle alarm that doesn't go off — or goes off silently, or only at the very end of the window — is usually iOS treating it like any other third-party app, plus one or two Sleep Cycle settings doing exactly what they were set to do. Sleep Cycle is a sleep tracker with a gentle "smart" alarm built in; it's a different animal from Apple's Clock, and it fails in different ways.
Here are the causes in the order they actually turn out to be the problem.
Quick answer: check that Sleep Cycle's notifications aren't set to Deliver Quietly, that Ringtone and Alerts volume is up, that the phone was charged and not in Low Power Mode, that the wake-up window is what you think it is, and that you didn't snooze it by picking up the phone. Then run a test alarm with your real night settings.
1. Notifications got switched to "Deliver Quietly"
This is the big one, and it tends to happen after an iOS update. Sleep Cycle delivers its alarm as a notification, and if iOS has that notification set to Deliver Quietly, the alarm fires with no sound. Sleep Cycle's own support points people here first, and Apple's community forums have long threads of users whose alarm "stopped making sound" after updating.
Fix: Settings → Notifications → Sleep Cycle → make sure Allow Notifications is on, Sounds is on, and it isn't in the quiet-delivery state. Sleep Cycle's alarm troubleshooting covers the exact toggles for your iOS version.
2. The volume that matters is down
Alarm and notification sound on iPhone follows Ringtone and Alerts volume (Settings → Sounds & Haptics), not media volume. With "Change with Buttons" on, one volume-down press during the day lowers tomorrow's alarm without telling you.
Fix: drag Ringtone and Alerts up, turn Change with Buttons off. The full list of volume traps is in iPhone alarm too quiet? 7 fixes.
3. Low Power Mode or a dead battery
Sleep Cycle tracks all night using the microphone or accelerometer, which means it depends on background activity. Low Power Mode restricts that, and a phone that dies at 3 a.m. has no alarm at all. If your phone was under 20% when you went to bed, Low Power Mode may have switched on by itself.
Fix: charge overnight. If you want the phone away from the bed, move the charger, don't skip it.
4. It went off — at the end of the window
Sleep Cycle doesn't ring at the time you set. It rings somewhere inside a wake-up window (10 to 30 minutes, 30 recommended) that ends at your alarm time, when it detects light sleep. If it can't detect your sleep phase — phone placed wrong, microphone blocked, too much noise in the room — it falls back to ringing at the end of the window. Sleep Cycle explains this behaviour directly.
So if you set 7:00 with a 30-minute window and it rang at 7:00, it didn't fail; that's the fallback. And if it rang at 6:35 and you slept through it, it was doing what it's designed to do. Set the window to the shortest option if you want the alarm closer to a fixed time.
5. You snoozed it without meaning to
Sleep Cycle's snooze is triggered by double-tapping near the phone (microphone mode), double-tapping the phone (accelerometer mode), or simply picking the phone up — Sleep Cycle's snooze modes list all three. For a heavy sleeper, that's a snooze that fires when you roll over. With Intelligent Snooze on, each snooze gets shorter until your alarm time, so the alarm can effectively tap you awake and then stop.
Fix: switch to Regular snooze with a fixed length in Profile → More → Snooze, or turn snooze off entirely. If the pattern is "it rang and I don't remember," why you turn off alarms in your sleep explains why — and no setting fixes that one.
6. The phone was placed wrong
Microphone mode expects the phone on the nightstand, screen up, close to the bed. Accelerometer mode needs the phone in the bed. Get those crossed — or leave the phone face-down under a pillow, or in a case that muffles the mic — and detection degrades, which pushes you into cause 4. Sleep Cycle's phone placement guide has the specifics.
7. Silent mode, Focus, and the app being closed
Three iOS-level things:
- Do Not Disturb: Sleep Cycle says it works with DND on. Sleep Focus with a schedule is the one to double-check, because it can re-enable itself the night you set up a sleep schedule.
- Silent switch: a third-party alarm's behaviour with the ring/silent switch depends on how the app delivers sound. Don't assume — test it (below).
- App closed: Sleep Cycle supports background mode, but recommends keeping it in the foreground, phone unlocked, so you can stop the alarm without unlocking. Force-quitting the app from the switcher is the risky move; open it before bed and leave it.
8. The alarm you expected was somewhere else
If you also have a Sleep schedule set in Apple's Health app, or an alarm on your Apple Watch, it's easy to think Sleep Cycle failed when a different alarm was the one you were counting on. Check Clock → Alarms and the Watch's Alarms app — Sleep Focus alarm not going off covers the Apple-side confusion.
The two-minute test
After changing anything:
- Turn on the Focus you'll have on overnight, and flip the silent switch.
- Start a Sleep Cycle alarm with the wake-up window set to its shortest option, two minutes out.
- Put the phone where it sleeps. Wait, without touching it.
Full sound: fixed. Banner with no sound: cause 1 or 2. Nothing: cause 3 or 7.
If it works and you still sleep through it
Sleep Cycle is built for a gentle wake-up — a soft sound inside a light-sleep window, snoozed by touching the phone. That's a great design for someone who wakes easily and hates being jolted. It's the wrong design for someone who sleeps through fire alarms. Nothing on this page changes that; the fixes make it work as intended, and as intended is gentle.
If that's you, the alarm that gets you up needs the opposite properties: loud, at a fixed time, and impossible to stop from bed. WakeUpBroo has no snooze and no dismiss button — it stops only when you type a rotating code from wakeupbroo.com/code on a laptop or another device across the room. Keep Sleep Cycle for the tracking and the gentle first nudge; let the phone across the room do the part it can't. The comparison is in Sleep Cycle alternative for heavy sleepers.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why did my Sleep Cycle alarm not go off?
Most often the app's notifications were set to Deliver Quietly (common after an iOS update), Ringtone and Alerts volume was low, the phone hit Low Power Mode or died, or the alarm rang inside its wake-up window and you snoozed it by picking up the phone. Work through the eight causes and run a two-minute test alarm.
Why does Sleep Cycle ring at the end of the wake-up window?
Because it could not detect a light-sleep phase during the window, so it fell back to the alarm time. Wrong phone placement, a blocked microphone or room noise all cause this. It is the intended fallback, not a failure.
Does Sleep Cycle work with Do Not Disturb?
Sleep Cycle states its alarm works with Do Not Disturb on. Scheduled Sleep Focus is worth double-checking, and the ring/silent switch should be tested rather than assumed, as with any third-party alarm.
Does Sleep Cycle need to stay open to ring?
Background mode is supported, but Sleep Cycle recommends leaving the app in the foreground with the phone unlocked so the alarm can be stopped without unlocking. Force-quitting the app is the thing to avoid.
Sleep Cycle works fine but I still sleep through it — what now?
Sleep Cycle is designed to wake you gently, and its snooze fires when you touch or pick up the phone. For a heavy sleeper that is the wrong design. WakeUpBroo has no snooze and no dismiss button; it stops only when you type a rotating code from wakeupbroo.com/code on a device across the room, so stopping it means standing up.
Gentle is the design. That's the problem.
WakeUpBroo has no snooze and no dismiss button. It stops only when you type a rotating code from this website on a device across the room.
