iPhone alarm volume too low? Fix quiet alarms
If your iPhone alarm volume is too low, do not start with the side buttons. Start with the alert volume setting that actually controls alarms.
On iPhone, Apple's Clock alarm volume is controlled from Settings -> Sounds & Haptics -> Ringtone and Alerts. Media volume is separate. That is why a video can sound loud at night while your alarm is still too quiet in the morning.
Apple explains alarm setup in its iPhone Clock alarm guide. If you have a Face ID iPhone, also check Apple's Attention Aware Features page because that setting can lower alert volume.
If your alarm is technically loud but you still sleep through it, download WakeUpBroo on the App Store. It makes you stop the alarm with a code or QR from another screen, not a sleepy tap from bed.
Set Ringtone and Alerts volume to max
Go to Settings -> Sounds & Haptics. Under Ringtone and Alerts, drag the slider to the right. This is the most important alarm volume control.
Then test your alarm while your phone is locked. Do not test by playing a song or video, because that checks media volume, not alarm volume.
If this fixes it, leave the slider high overnight.
Turn off Change with Buttons
On the same Settings -> Sounds & Haptics screen, look for "Change with Buttons."
When it is on, the side buttons can change Ringtone and Alerts volume. That sounds useful, but it also means one accidental volume-down press can make tomorrow's alarm too quiet.
For heavy sleepers, the safer setup is:
- Set Ringtone and Alerts high.
- Turn Change with Buttons off.
- Use the side buttons only for media volume.
Test Attention Aware Features
Attention Aware can lower alerts when your iPhone thinks you are looking at it. In normal use that can feel smart. In bed, it can be annoying if the phone is pointed at your face and the alarm drops in volume.
To test it, go to Settings -> Face ID & Passcode -> Attention Aware Features and turn it off for one morning.
If your alarm suddenly sounds louder, you found the cause.
Check the alarm sound
Open Clock -> Alarms -> tap your alarm -> Sound. Make sure it is not set to None and pick a tone that is sharp enough to cut through sleep.
Heavy sleepers often do better with a sound they do not hear all day. If you use the same tone for every alert, your brain can learn to ignore it.

Disconnect Bluetooth before sleep
If your iPhone is connected to AirPods, a speaker, or a car audio system, check the output before bed. Bluetooth issues can make alarms feel inconsistent, especially if headphones are dead, in another room, or still paired.
The simplest habit is to turn Bluetooth off before sleep or confirm audio output is the iPhone speaker.
If volume is fixed but mornings still fail
Volume helps, but it does not solve the whole heavy-sleeper problem. If you can reach the phone from bed, you can still dismiss the alarm before you are fully awake.
The stronger setup is:
- phone away from bed
- one real alarm, not ten backup alarms
- lights on before or with the alarm
- no snooze
- a dismiss task that requires standing
WakeUpBroo is built for that setup. Put wakeupbroo.com/code on a laptop, tablet, or another screen across the room. When the alarm rings, you need that rotating code or QR before it stops.
For the full morning system, read how to not sleep through your alarm, why you turn off alarms in your sleep, and the QR code alarm app guide.
Quick checklist
- Settings -> Sounds & Haptics -> Ringtone and Alerts -> max.
- Change with Buttons -> off.
- Face ID & Passcode -> Attention Aware Features -> test off.
- Clock -> Alarm -> Sound -> not None.
- Bluetooth output -> iPhone speaker.
- If you still sleep through it, use distance plus a dismiss task.
// FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why is my iPhone alarm volume too low?
The most common causes are low Ringtone and Alerts volume, Change with Buttons lowering alert volume, Attention Aware on Face ID iPhones, Bluetooth routing, or a quiet alarm sound.
Is iPhone alarm volume the same as media volume?
No. iPhone alarm loudness is controlled by the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings -> Sounds & Haptics, not only by the volume used for videos or music.
What if max alarm volume still does not wake me?
If max volume still fails, use distance and a dismiss task. Put the phone away from bed and use an alarm that requires a code, QR scan, or another action before it stops.
