iPhone alarm settings: every option, explained

WakeUpBroo

iPhone alarm

No snooze button. You turn it off from your laptop, not from bed.

The iPhone alarm looks like one screen with a time picker, but its behaviour is decided by settings scattered across four different places: the alarm itself, Sounds & Haptics, Face ID settings, and the Sleep schedule in Health. Most "my alarm did something weird" mornings trace back to one of them.

This is the complete map — what each setting does, where it lives, and which one to check when something's off.

Quick answer: the alarm's own screen controls time, repeat, sound, and snooze. Volume lives in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and Alerts — not the side buttons. Attention Aware (Face ID settings) can quietly lower it. And the Sleep | Wake Up alarm at the top of your list is a different alarm with its own rules.

The alarm's own settings (Clock → Alarms → tap the alarm)

  • Time and AM/PM. The classic failure is 7:00 PM for 7:00 AM. Check the meridiem before bed, not after.
  • Repeat. A weekday-only alarm does nothing on Saturday. A one-time alarm switches itself off after firing — which is also how you can tell whether it rang while you slept.
  • Sound. Set to None, the alarm fires silently — banner and vibration only. Pick something sharp; best alarm sounds for heavy sleepers ranks the options.
  • Snooze. Per-alarm toggle, and since iOS 26 a per-alarm Snooze Duration (1–15 minutes, 9 by default). If snooze is missing or behaves oddly, iPhone snooze not working covers every case.

Volume (Settings → Sounds & Haptics)

The single most misunderstood part. Alarm volume is the Ringtone and Alerts slider — it is not the volume the side buttons change while you're watching a video.

  • Ringtone and Alerts: drag right, that's your alarm volume.
  • Change with Buttons: when on, the side buttons do change alarm volume — which means a stray press during the day quietly lowers tomorrow's alarm. Heavy sleepers should turn it off.
  • Still too quiet after that? There are seven causes, worked through in iPhone alarm too quiet.

The setting almost nobody knows: Attention Aware

Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Attention Aware Features. When the front camera thinks you're looking at the phone, it lowers alert volume — including the alarm. A phone angled at your face on the nightstand can trigger it while you sleep. Turn it off if your alarm "used to be louder."

Silent Mode, Do Not Disturb and Focus

Apple's Clock alarm ignores all three — it rings at full volume with the silent switch on, in Do Not Disturb, and on silent mode. No setting needed. The catch: this exemption belongs to the Clock app, not to alarms in general — a third-party alarm app only rings through them if it uses iOS 26's AlarmKit or is allowed through your Focus.

The Sleep schedule alarm is a different alarm

The Sleep | Wake Up section at the top of the Alarms tab comes from the Health app's sleep schedule, and it plays by its own rules: its own gentler sounds, its own volume slider, its own snooze — all edited inside the sleep schedule, not on the alarm. It can also fire on an Apple Watch instead of the phone. If your wake-up alarm has been mysteriously gentle, or rings on your watch, this is why. Sleep Focus alarm not going off untangles the rest.

Vibration and haptics

Each alarm sound has a paired vibration, editable under the alarm's Sound screen → Vibration — including None, and a vibration-only setup for a silent alarm. On an Apple Watch, alarm strength is a separate setting entirely (Prominent haptics), covered in Apple Watch alarm not vibrating.

The settings that don't exist

Worth knowing what you can't configure, because people search for these:

  • Ring duration. An iPhone alarm rings for about 15 minutes, then stops for good. Not adjustable.
  • Volume ramp-up. The Clock alarm starts at full volume; there's no fade-in setting.
  • A harder dismiss. Apple's alarm is always one interaction from silence — slide to stop, and it's over. There is no setting that makes stopping it require being awake.

The checklist version

  1. Alarm screen: time, AM/PM, repeat days, sound not None, snooze how you want it.
  2. Sounds & Haptics: Ringtone and Alerts high, Change with Buttons off.
  3. Face ID & Passcode: Attention Aware off.
  4. Alarms tab: your real alarm is a regular one, not (only) the Sleep | Wake Up one.
  5. Test it: two-minute alarm, phone locked, silent switch on. If it rings loud, your settings are right.

When the settings are right and the morning still fails

Every setting above tunes how the alarm rings. None of them changes how it stops — one tap or slide, doable half-asleep, from bed, without a memory of it. That last gap is a design decision, not a setting, and if it's your actual problem, no settings page fixes it.

That's the gap WakeUpBroo exists for: no snooze, no dismiss button, and the alarm stops only when you type a rotating code from wakeupbroo.com/code on a laptop or other device across the room. Get the Clock settings right for the everyday — and when the morning genuinely matters, use the alarm whose off switch isn't in bed with you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where are the alarm settings on iPhone?

In four places: the alarm itself (Clock → Alarms → tap it) for time, repeat, sound and snooze; Settings → Sounds & Haptics for volume; Settings → Face ID & Passcode for Attention Aware; and the Health app's sleep schedule for the Sleep | Wake Up alarm.

How do I change the alarm volume on iPhone?

Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and Alerts. That slider is the alarm volume — the side buttons only affect it when Change with Buttons is on, which is also how alarm volume gets lowered by accident.

Why is my alarm quieter than it used to be?

Usually Attention Aware Features (Settings → Face ID & Passcode): when the front camera detects your face, alert volume drops. A phone angled toward you on the nightstand triggers it. Turning it off is the most common fix.

Can I make my iPhone alarm ring longer than 15 minutes?

No. The Clock alarm rings for about 15 minutes and then stops for good, and there is no setting to change it. If you sleep through that window, the fix is an alarm you must stand up to stop, not a longer ring.

Can I make the iPhone alarm harder to turn off?

Not with settings — Apple's alarm is always one slide from silence. WakeUpBroo removes that: no snooze, no dismiss button, and the alarm stops only when you type a rotating code from wakeupbroo.com/code on a device across the room.

Settings tune the ring. Not the stop.

WakeUpBroo has no snooze and no dismiss button. It stops only when you type a rotating code from this website on a device across the room.
