Does Do Not Disturb silence alarms?

No. Do Not Disturb does not silence alarms set in the iPhone's built-in Clock app. Your alarm will ring at its normal volume even with DND on, a Focus mode running, or Sleep Focus active overnight.

That's by design: DND is for calls, texts, and notifications — interruptions from other people. An alarm is an interruption you asked for, so iOS treats it differently. Apple confirms this in its alarm guide: Clock alarms sound with Silent Mode, Do Not Disturb, and Focus on.

But there are real exceptions — cases where DND seems to have eaten your alarm. Here's what actually happens.

What Do Not Disturb actually silences

With DND or any Focus mode on, your iPhone quiets:

  • phone calls (unless from allowed contacts)
  • texts and app notifications
  • most third-party app sounds

What it does not quiet:

  • Clock app alarms
  • timers you set in Clock
  • emergency alerts

So "will my alarm go off on Do Not Disturb" has the same answer as on Silent Mode: yes, if it's a Clock alarm.

Sleep Focus: the one that confuses people

Sleep Focus (set up through the Health app's sleep schedule) dims the lock screen and silences notifications overnight — and it also comes with its own wake-up alarm that behaves a little differently from a regular Clock alarm.

Two things to check if you use a sleep schedule:

  1. The wake-up alarm has its own volume. Open the Clock app → Alarm tab → tap the Sleep | Wake Up section at the top → check the wake-up alarm's sound and volume settings. It's controlled separately from Ringtone and Alerts.
  2. Gentle sounds by design. Sleep schedule alarms default to softer, calmer tones. For a heavy sleeper, that's the wrong default — pick a sharper sound, or use a regular alarm instead.

The real reason your alarm didn't ring during DND

If your alarm stayed silent overnight and DND was on, DND almost certainly wasn't the cause. The usual suspects:

  • Ringtone and Alerts volume was turned down — the slider in Settings → Sounds & Haptics controls alarm loudness
  • Attention Aware lowered the volume when your Face ID iPhone saw your face
  • audio was routed to AirPods or a Bluetooth speaker
  • the alarm sound was set to None
  • it was a third-party alarm app — and this is the one case where DND does matter

Third-party alarm apps: the real DND victims

Here's the exception that catches people. Many third-party alarm apps deliver their alarm as a notification — and notifications are exactly what DND and Focus silence. So the built-in Clock alarm rings through DND, while the third-party alarm you trusted gets muted with everything else.

If you use a third-party alarm, either allow the app in your Focus settings, or use an app built on iOS's proper alarm support. WakeUpBroo uses AlarmKit, so it rings through Silent Mode, DND, and Focus the way Apple's Clock does — and unlike Clock, it has no snooze and no dismiss button. To stop it, you enter the rotating code from wakeupbroo.com/code on another device, away from bed.

Bottom line

Do Not Disturb will not stop your Clock alarm — set your alarm and turn DND on with confidence. If an alarm failed during DND, check volume, Attention Aware, Bluetooth, and whether the alarm came from a third-party app that behaves like a notification.

And if the alarm rings fine but you keep sleeping through it or dismissing it half-asleep, that's a different problem with a different fix: read why you sleep through alarms or compare the best alarm apps for heavy sleepers.

// FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Do Not Disturb silence alarms on iPhone?

No. Alarms set in the built-in Clock app ring at normal volume even with Do Not Disturb or any Focus mode on. DND silences calls, texts, and notifications — not Clock alarms or timers.

Will my alarm go off if Sleep Focus is on?

Yes. Sleep Focus silences notifications overnight but does not stop alarms. Note that a sleep-schedule wake-up alarm has its own separate volume and defaults to gentler sounds, so heavy sleepers should check those settings or use a regular Clock alarm instead.

Does Do Not Disturb silence third-party alarm apps?

It can. Many third-party alarms deliver sound as a notification, which DND and Focus modes silence. Either allow the app in your Focus settings or use an alarm app built on iOS's alarm support. WakeUpBroo uses AlarmKit, so it rings through DND and Focus like the built-in Clock app.

Why didn't my alarm ring when Do Not Disturb was on?

DND almost certainly wasn't the cause if it was a Clock alarm. Check the Ringtone and Alerts volume slider, Attention Aware on Face ID iPhones, Bluetooth audio routing, whether the alarm sound was set to None, and whether the alarm came from a third-party app.
