Does sleep mode silence alarms on iPhone? No — here's what it does mute
No. If you put your iPhone in sleep mode, your alarms still go off. "Sleep mode" on an iPhone is the Sleep Focus, and Apple is explicit that alarms ring through every Focus: your alarm sounds even when you turn on Silent mode, or Do Not Disturb, or another Focus.
What sleep mode does silence is almost everything else — which is exactly why it's safe to leave on overnight.
Quick answer: sleep mode (Sleep Focus) mutes calls and notifications and dims the Lock Screen, but Clock alarms ring at full volume through it. If an alarm didn't wake you in sleep mode, the cause is almost always the gentle Sleep | Wake Up alarm, an alarm ringing on your Apple Watch instead, or a third-party alarm app that hasn't been allowed through the Focus.
What sleep mode actually does
Sleep Focus is one of iPhone's built-in Focus modes. While it's on, it:
- Filters calls and notifications, except the people and apps you allow.
- Simplifies and dims the Lock Screen, so a late notification doesn't light up the room.
- Tells people you're unavailable, if you share Focus status.
It turns on in one of three ways: manually from Control Center → Focus → Sleep, automatically at bedtime if you have a sleep schedule in the Health app, or at the start of Wind Down, which you can set anywhere from 15 minutes to 3 hours before bed. It switches off at your scheduled wake-up time.
None of that touches the Clock app's alarms. They aren't notifications, and Focus doesn't filter them.
Will my alarm still go off in sleep mode? Case by case
| Alarm | Rings in sleep mode? | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Clock app alarm | Yes | Plays at your alarm volume, which may be low |
| Sleep | Wake Up alarm | Yes | Its own gentle sounds and volume; can be vibration-only |
| Timer | Yes, in practice | Silent if its sound is set to Stop Playing |
| Third-party alarm app | Depends | Needs its Alarm permission (iOS 26+) or to be allowed in the Focus |
| Apple Watch alarm | Taps your wrist | No sound if the watch is in Silent mode |
Why it feels like sleep mode silenced your alarm
People search this after a real morning where something went wrong. It's rarely the Focus. It's usually one of these:
1. The Sleep | Wake Up alarm is doing the waking. The alarm attached to your sleep schedule is a separate alarm from the ones you set in Clock. It has its own sound list — softer by design — its own volume slider and its own vibration setting, all edited in the sleep schedule, not on the alarm. If its sound is set to None, it only vibrates. It's the same system that turns sleep mode on, which is why the two get blamed together.
2. It rang on your Apple Watch. If you wear your watch to bed, the sleep alarm can fire there as a wrist tap instead of on the phone. The watch's sleep alarm settings let you choose to always play it on iPhone. And if the watch is in Silent mode, its alarms tap without sound.
3. The phone was in StandBy. Apple notes that haptics for alarms are turned off in StandBy — so a vibration-only alarm on a charging, sideways iPhone does nothing at all.
4. The volume was low. Sleep mode doesn't lower the alarm, but a low alarm volume does. On iOS 27, alarms and timers follow your ringtone volume unless you turn off Match Ringtone Volume under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Alarms and Timers — then they get their own slider.
5. It was a third-party alarm app. Before iOS 26, alarm apps were just notifications, and a Focus could silence them. On iOS 26 and later, apps built on Apple's AlarmKit can break through Silent mode and Focus — but only after you grant the app its Alarm permission. If you declined that prompt, allow the app in Settings → Focus → Sleep → Apps, or turn the permission on in the app's settings.
Each of these has a full fix in Sleep Focus alarm not going off.
Should you use sleep mode?
Yes — it's one of the better things you can do for a night's sleep, and it doesn't cost you your alarm. The one habit worth adding: after you change anything about your sleep schedule, set a Clock alarm for two minutes from now, put the phone in sleep mode, lock it, and listen. If it rings, your morning alarm will too.

When the alarm rings and you still don't get up
Sleep mode can't stop your alarm — but neither can it make you get out of bed. If the real problem is that it rings and you switch it off without waking, the fix is moving the off switch away from you. WakeUpBroo has no snooze and no dismiss button: it stops only when you type a rotating code from wakeupbroo.com/code on a laptop or other device across the room. It's built on Apple's alarm system, so once you allow its Alarm permission it rings through sleep mode, Silent mode and Focus like the Clock app does.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does sleep mode silence alarms on iPhone?
No. Sleep mode on iPhone is the Sleep Focus, and Apple says Clock alarms sound even with Silent mode, Do Not Disturb or another Focus turned on. Sleep mode silences calls and notifications, not alarms.
Will my alarm go off if my phone is on sleep mode?
Yes. Clock alarms ring at your alarm volume in sleep mode. If one didn't wake you, check whether it was the gentler Sleep | Wake Up alarm, whether it rang on your Apple Watch instead, and whether its sound is set to None.
Does sleep mode silence third-party alarm apps?
It can. On iOS 26 and later, alarm apps built on Apple's AlarmKit break through Focus once you grant their Alarm permission. Otherwise, allow the app in Settings, Focus, Sleep, Apps.
Does the Sleep | Wake Up alarm work in sleep mode?
Yes — it's part of the same sleep schedule that turns sleep mode on. It has its own sounds, volume and vibration settings, edited in the sleep schedule, and it only vibrates if its sound is set to None.
Does sleep mode silence alarms on Apple Watch?
Watch alarms still tap your wrist, but if the watch is in Silent mode they make no sound. The sleep alarm can also fire on the watch instead of your iPhone unless you choose to always play it on iPhone.
Sleep mode won't stop your alarm. Will you?
WakeUpBroo has no snooze and no dismiss button. It stops only when you type a rotating code from this website on a device across the room.
