Does Alarmy work on Do Not Disturb? Usually — with conditions
Usually, yes. Alarmy's alarms are designed to ring through Do Not Disturb, Focus modes and the silent switch on iPhone. But "designed to" is doing real work in that sentence, because Alarmy is a third-party app, and iOS treats third-party alarms very differently from the built-in Clock.
Apple's Clock alarm gets a special pass: it rings at full volume through Silent Mode, Do Not Disturb, every Focus, and with headphones connected, no setup required. A third-party alarm gets none of that automatically. It has to earn each exemption through permissions you grant, and every one of those can be switched off without you noticing.
So the honest answer to "does Alarmy work on DND" is: it works when the conditions below are all true, and it goes quiet when any one of them isn't.
Quick answer: Alarmy can ring through Do Not Disturb and Silent Mode, but only if notifications are allowed, the app is permitted inside your Focus (or uses Time Sensitive alerts), the app hasn't been force-quit, and volume is up. Test it tonight with a two-minute alarm before you trust it tomorrow.
The conditions that have to be true
1. Notifications are on — all of them
Settings → Notifications → Alarmy. Allow Notifications must be on, and so should Sounds, Banners and Lock Screen. If you ever tapped "Turn Off" on an Alarmy notification, or cleaned up your notifications in bulk, the alarm may now fire silently — a banner with no sound is exactly what that looks like at 6 a.m.
2. Alarmy is allowed inside your Focus
This is the one that catches most people. Do Not Disturb, Sleep Focus, Work Focus and any custom Focus all silence notifications by default, and a third-party alarm is delivered as a notification. Either:
- add Alarmy to the allowed apps of every Focus that could be on overnight (Settings → Focus → Sleep → Apps → Allow Notifications From), or
- make sure Time Sensitive Notifications are allowed in that Focus — alarm apps typically use Time Sensitive alerts to break through.
If you use Sleep Focus with a sleep schedule, check it specifically. It switches itself on every night, which is why Alarmy can work fine on Monday and fail on Tuesday after you set up a sleep schedule.
3. The app hasn't been force-quit
Swiping Alarmy away in the app switcher is the most common reason it fails outright. iOS can still deliver the notification, but the continuous ringing, the mission screen and the "keeps going until you finish" behavior depend on the app being alive in the background. Force-quitting also breaks the backup ringing many alarm apps rely on. Open it before bed and leave it.
4. Silent Mode: it depends on how the alarm is delivered
Normal notification sounds are muted by the silent switch. Alarm apps work around this in various ways, and how well it works varies by app version and iOS version. On iOS 26, Apple added AlarmKit, which lets third-party apps ring the way Clock does; an app that has adopted it will ask you for a separate alarm permission the first time, and from then on the silent switch is not a factor. If your Alarmy version hasn't asked for that permission, treat Silent Mode as a risk and test it.
5. The volume that matters is up
Notification and alarm sound on iPhone follows Ringtone and Alerts volume (Settings → Sounds & Haptics), not media volume. If "Change with Buttons" is on, a stray volume-down press during the day quietly lowers tomorrow's alarm. Full walkthrough in iPhone alarm too quiet? 7 fixes.
Does Alarmy work on airplane mode?
Yes. Airplane mode turns off radios, not alarms. Alarmy's alarm is scheduled on the phone itself, so it fires with no Wi-Fi or cellular — the same as the built-in alarm. The exception is any mission that needs the internet; if you've set a mission that can't load offline, the alarm will still ring but the dismiss flow may be awkward. More on the general case in does airplane mode turn off alarms.
Does Alarmy work if my phone is off or dead?
No. No app can ring a phone that is off, and that includes Apple's own Clock. If the battery dies at 3 a.m., the 7 a.m. alarm dies with it. Charge overnight — across the room, if you're a heavy sleeper, so the charger and the alarm are both out of reach.
The two-minute test
Every item above can be right and still surprise you. Before you rely on it:
- Turn on the Focus you'll have on overnight (usually Sleep).
- Flip the silent switch on.
- Set an Alarmy alarm two minutes out, lock the phone, put it down.
- Wait.
If it rings at full volume, you're set. If it shows a banner with no sound, it's condition 1, 4 or 5. If nothing at all happens, it's condition 2 or 3.
Why "it rang" is only half the problem
Here's the part this question usually hides. For most people who search whether Alarmy works on Do Not Disturb, the real history is: the alarm rang, and they turned it off anyway.
A mission alarm is harder to dismiss than a normal one. But the mission still happens on the phone in your hand, in bed. Math problems get solved on autopilot. A shake mission takes four seconds. A photo mission works on any object within arm's reach. The barrier is real, but it's a barrier you can clear without ever becoming vertical — and half-asleep people are remarkably good at clearing it.
WakeUpBroo takes a different approach: there is no mission on the phone because there is no dismiss button on the phone. The only way to stop it is to type a rotating code shown on wakeupbroo.com/code, which you open on a laptop or another device across the room. The alarm doesn't test whether you can do a task; it tests whether you're standing up. If Alarmy's missions have stopped working on you, that's the difference that matters — see the full comparison or what else is out there in apps like Alarmy.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Alarmy work on Do Not Disturb?
Usually, but not automatically. Unlike Apple's Clock, a third-party alarm is delivered as a notification, so Alarmy rings through Do Not Disturb only if notifications are enabled, the app is allowed inside the active Focus (or uses Time Sensitive alerts), and the app has not been force-quit. Test it with a two-minute alarm before relying on it.
Does Alarmy work on silent mode?
It depends on how your version delivers the alarm. Plain notification sounds are muted by the silent switch; alarm apps use workarounds, and on iOS 26 an app that has adopted Apple's AlarmKit rings through silent mode the way Clock does. If Alarmy has asked you for a separate alarm permission, it is using AlarmKit. If not, test silent mode before you trust it.
Does Alarmy work on airplane mode?
Yes. Airplane mode turns off radios, not scheduled alarms. Alarmy fires offline like any alarm; only missions that need an internet connection are affected.
Why did Alarmy ring but I still overslept?
Because the mission happens on the phone in your hand, in bed. Math, shake and photo missions can all be completed half-asleep without standing up. If that is your pattern, you need an alarm whose off switch is physically elsewhere — WakeUpBroo has no dismiss button at all and stops only when you type a rotating code from wakeupbroo.com/code on a device across the room.
Missions you can do from bed aren't enough.
WakeUpBroo has no dismiss button and no snooze. It stops only when you type a rotating code from this website on a device across the room.
